Lamination Finishing Overview
Lamination is a protective surface finishing process where a thin plastic film is bonded to printed packaging materials. This clear layer enhances visual appeal while providing added strength, durability, and moisture resistance. Commonly used on folding cartons and flexible packaging, lamination helps preserve artwork quality, improves shelf life, and gives packaging a more premium, polished appearance.
Available in gloss and matte finishes, lamination is a practical and cost-effective way to elevate packaging while ensuring long-term protection.
Key Features of Lamination
- Enhances color vibrancy, sharpness, and overall print quality
- Provides strong protection against moisture, dirt, scratches, and wear
- Improves durability for handling, storage, and transportation
- Adds a smooth, refined surface feel
- Available in gloss and matte finish options
- Helps maintain artwork quality over longer shelf life
- Budget-friendly way to increase perceived product value
- Suitable for folding cartons and other flexible packaging formats
How the Lamination Process Works
The lamination process involves applying a thin plastic film to the printed surface using heat, pressure, or adhesive bonding. Once printing is complete, the film is carefully aligned and pressed onto the substrate to ensure full coverage and a smooth finish.
After bonding, the laminated material is cooled and trimmed as needed, resulting in a sealed surface that protects the print while enhancing its appearance. Depending on the chosen finish, lamination can create either a glossy, reflective look or a subtle, matte effect with reduced glare and improved color density.
Surface Finish Selections
Gloss Lamination
Provides a smooth, shiny finish that enhances colors and adds a clean, premium look while protecting against moisture and surface wear.
Matte Lamination
Offers a soft, non-glare finish with rich color depth, giving packaging a subtle, modern, and sophisticated appearance.
Lamination Film Material
PLA Film
Polylactic Acid (PLA) film is a compostable and plant-based material designed for eco-conscious packaging solutions. It is food-safe and offers a clear, smooth surface suitable for lamination. PLA film is an excellent choice for brands focused on sustainability, especially in food and environmentally responsible packaging applications.
BOPP Film
Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film is stretched in both machine and transverse directions to deliver excellent strength, clarity, and durability. It offers strong moisture resistance, making it ideal for packaging that requires long shelf life and surface protection. BOPP film is lightweight, recyclable, and commonly used for lamination where a clean, glossy finish and print protection are essential.
PE Film
Polyethylene (PE) film is a versatile plastic film widely used in packaging and labeling applications. Known for its flexibility and toughness, it provides good moisture protection and a smooth surface for lamination. PE film delivers a bright, glossy appearance while maintaining durability, making it suitable for a wide range of packaging formats.
